The Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds will travel to AIS this week to take on the Giants Netball team in the Round 11 match of the Suncorp Super Netball competition.
Firebirds head coach Roselee Jencke said the team was focused on maintaining the momentum from last week’s second half against the Lightning and were hungry for the first win of the season.
In a tightly fought contest, the Firebirds closed a nine-point gap in the second half to finish at full time 64 – 66, just two points shy of their first win for the season.
“Things we’ve been concentrating on in training this week is our own game and ensuring good connection throughout the court but we really want to make sure we leverage off our strong finish from last week and take that form into the match with the Giants,” Jencke said.
“We’ve really been concentrating on defence and making sure that we really bring an assertive, aggressive style of defence. We’re looking for accountability and it means stepping and disrupting our opponents and interrupting their flow,” Jencke said.
Romelda Aiken returns to the starting line-up following a strong week of training.
“Romelda is back and has been performing well at training all week so we’re looking forward to seeing her back on court,” Jencke said.
Captain Gabi Simpson said she was looking forward to matching up against the Giants.
“This game is going to be very exciting. We’ve been training hard knowing and we’re ready for a win,” she said.
“We’ve got some new talent in our line-up and we’ve got a great energy with the team at the moment. We’re feeling really settled and confident,” she said.
Macy Gardner made her Firebirds debut last week and has been named in the starting 12 for Round 11.
“Macy had a really good start, she took a lot of confidence from the leaders, particularly Gretel and Gabi who were extremely supportive of her and she just got on there and read the space and let the ball go,” Jencke said. “I was really seeing what she could do (up against Laura Langman) and it was a sink or swim moment and she floated really well.”
