The Firebirds travelled to Wagga Wagga and Griffith to face GIANTS Netball as part of the Riverina Road Trip, the spoils shared with both teams picking up a win over the two games.
A squad of 14 players all got court time across the weekend, including training partners Elsa Sif Sandholt, Jessie Laga’aia and Sasha Flegler as well as Queensland Firebirds Futures Academy duo Lily Gribble and Jayden Molo.
Captain Ruby Bakewell-Doran and Macy Gardner were both rested for Friday’s match in stifling conditions in Wagga Wagga after spending time in Canberra competing in practice matches against the Australian Diamonds but returned to the action in Sunday’s 63-60 win in Griffith.
For Head Coach Kiri Wills the weekend was hugely beneficial as her team ramps up preparations for the SSN Round One clash against defending premiers Melbourne Vixens at Nissan Arena on March 15.
“That opportunity with the national squad has certainly sharpened them up for the season, I thought they both looked really good,” Wills said of Bakewell-Doran and Gardner’s efforts.
“Starting to build those combinations with Kelly Jackson, Maddy (Gordon) and Te Paea (Selby-Rickit).
“All-in-all very happy with the weekend. Would definitely do it again if the Giants would have us.
“It’s been a great weekend to bring the team together.”
