Four current Queensland Firebirds and one former star are set to continue their academic studies in 2020 after being unveiled as part of the 51 strong group of recipients of a Sporting Scholarship from the club’s Premier Partner, The University of Queensland.
Offered in partnership with Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland and UQ Sport since 1990, the sporting scholarships assist exceptional athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite-level sport.
Gabi Simpson (Bachelor of Physiotherapy – Honours) and defenders Tara Hinchliffe (Bachelor of Psychological Science - Honours) and Kim Jenner (Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education – Honours) have received a Sports Achievement Scholarship, while new Firebird Rudi Ellis (Bachelor of Communication) will be a member of the UQ Sport Scholarship Ambassador Program.
Former Firebird and fan favourite Laura Clemesha has also received a Sports Achievement Scholarship for her Master of Organisational Psychology.
As Sporting Scholarship holders, the players will receive the following benefits:
- Free academic tutoring
- Free access to the full range of UQ Sport health and fitness facilities
- Free athlete workshops in sports nutrition, recovery and fatigue, sports psychology, social media training and more
- Academic liaison and support
The news comes at the perfect time for athletes juggling their playing and study commitments, with the COVID-19 related suspension of the Suncorp Super Netball competition allowing additional time to focus on their courses.
