We have so many special theme rounds which we celebrate, and personally ANZAC Day is a special occasion for me, as my grandfather served in WW2.
I think it’s so special to pay tribute to those who have served in Australia's armed forces, hose who continue to serve, and recognise and pay respects to those who have lost their lives.
I feel honoured that we can show this respect prior to our match on Sunday, a small token of our thanks to our armed service personnel.
Although serving your country and putting your life on the line to protect fellow Australians is far more important than a sporting match – we can draw on it for inspiration.
Working together to achieve a common goal and the sacrifices you make to achieve these goals are certainly common threads.
The fighting spirit is definitely one we need to show this week against Collingwood, a side that oozes talent and class.
They have been hit hard with COVID this season and have been below their best, but they always come out firing and have such a competitive spirit within their team.
I’m expecting a fierce battle with some exciting match ups across the court.
We have some nice momentum on the back of two wins in a row, but it really is one game at a time for us and focusing on what we need to do each week.
I think mostly, the wins are validation that what we are doing is successful and that gives you confidence to continue pushing and expecting more of each other.
We will never settle for last week’s result, there are always learnings from each game and new blueprints to strive for, however the wins are a good compass for the direction the subsequent matches need to take.
Locally, our feeder competition, the HART Sapphire series starts this weekend also and I can’t wait to come and watch the season-opener which is on before our game. We’re always keeping an eye on the up and coming players and love to see the talent here in our Queensland pathways.
Between myself and assistant coaches Katie (Walker) and Clare (Ferguson) we certainly like to keep a finger on the HSS pulse, especially to see how our training partners are going.
They are an important part of our program and it’s our opportunity to continue to provide them feedback on their game to help them reach SSN level.
On behalf of the Firebirds, I’d just like to thank the Firebirds fans for the past 2 home games, your support has been fantastic and the vibe in Nissan arena is electric.
See you all Sunday and Go Birdies!
Megs.
