Bakewell-Doran built on her impressive debut campaign with another stellar year in 2023, named Firebirds’ player of the year as well as members’ player of the year before being named as a reserve player for Australia’s successful World Cup campaign in South Africa.
An ever-present in the Firebirds’ 14 matches in 2023, Bakewell-Doran claimed 30 intercepts – the fourth-highest tally in the league – as well as 52 deflections, 19 rebounds and 62 gains to mark her status as one of the leading defenders in the competition.
A fan favourite and Brisbane local, keeping Bakewell-Doran in her squad was a big objective for Head Coach Bec Bulley.
“Ruby showed her debut 2022 season was no flash in the pan with a wonderful campaign this year,” Bulley said.
“Not only is Ruby a born competitor and leader with a will to win, she has the physical and technical skills to trouble attackers inside and outside the circle.
“Her contribution to the team was highlighted by her success in joining the legends of our club as the 2023 Laura Geitz Medallist, a well-earned accolade.”
Bakewell-Doran is eager to get down to business after a busy off-season which included her duties with the Diamonds in South Africa.
“I'm super grateful and incredibly stoked to be back in the purple dress for the next three years,” Bakewell-Doran said.
“Firebirds has always been home and I want to leave a legacy at this club - one that I can look back on at the end of my career and be really proud of.
“I'm really excited to get stuck in and see what this group of girls can achieve together this year.”
