The Queensland Firebirds’ passionate Purple Family are set to be the beneficiaries of a fan friendly run of home games in 2021, following the release of the full season fixture for the upcoming Suncorp Super Netball campaign.
The season opening State of Origin match up against the NSW Swifts, a rematch of the Firebirds first ever game back in 1997, is one of three Sunday fixtures for the Queenslanders, with an additional two marquee Saturday night games adding to an incredibly fan focussed draw at Nissan Arena for Members and supporters.
Queensland Firebirds CEO, Catherine Clark, believes the draw is just reward for the loyalty shown by the Purple Family through 2020.
“Our Members not only remained fiercely loyal to our Club through a challenging season, they also embraced the entire competition, with a traditionally warm Queensland welcome allowing the best netballers in the world to feel truly at home,” Clark said.
“We are delighted to see the passion and commitment they displayed for the game more broadly be rewarded with an outstanding run of quality home games in fan friendly timeslots.”
“Last year proved we play in one of the country’s premier indoor sporting venues and we can’t wait to welcome back a full house at Nissan Arena across all seven of our home games in 2021.”
Firebirds Head Coach Megan Anderson shared her excitement following the reveal of the draw for her first season in the role.
“As both a player and coach I’ve experienced the intensity of away games in front of the passionate Purple Family and I honestly cannot wait to walk out on court with that energy behind us,” Anderson said.
“I’m particularly looking forward to the opening round clash against the Swifts as I know from personal experience how much significance that game holds and I think it’s the perfect platform from which to launch our season.”
The Queensland side host the NSW Swifts and Adelaide Thunderbirds in consecutive Sunday home games to start the season, before returning to Nissan Arena to face defending Premiers the Melbourne Vixens in Round 5 on Saturday 29 May.
The Firebirds then host the West Coast Fever, GWS Giants and Collingwood Magpies in rounds 7, 9 and 11 respectively, before a blockbuster final home game of the season with another edition of the ‘Battle of the Bruce’ against the Sunshine Coast Lightning on Saturday 31 July at Nissan Arena.
