Queensland Firebirds fans in Far North Queensland are set for their first taste of Suncorp Super Netball, following today’s announcement from the league of the fixtures for Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2020 season.
The Firebirds will face the Melbourne Vixens at the Cairns Pop Up Arena on Sunday 20 September to conclude Round 13.
The game will hold added meaning for the Club, as they celebrate the League wide Indigenous Round with the Cairns community.
The Firebirds will wear their Indigenous dress, designed by contemporary Aboriginal artist Rachael Sarra from Goreng Goreng Country, while the match ball will also feature an Indigenous design.
Netball Queensland CEO, Catherine Clark, said it would be a proud moment to take such an important game to the North.
“We’ve been Queensland’s club for more than two decades and to represent all of our great State is an honour we treat with the utmost significance,” Clark said.
“North Queensland is one of our most passionate and engaged netball communities and has produced a number of Queensland Firebirds representatives, including our current star defender Kim Jenner.”
“We already enjoy a meaningful relationship with communities in Aurukun, Mapoon, Napranum, Yarrabah and the Cairns State High School through our Diamond Spirit program, which uses netball as a vehicle to empower and educate Indigenous girls in remote and regional communities.”
“We consider it a great privilege to be given the opportunity to build on these relationships by celebrating this special round in Far North Queensland, and look forward to engaging with the local community to ensure we play our part in highlighting the rich Indigenous culture in the region .”
Following the game in Cairns the Firebirds will return to Nissan Arena for their final game of the regular season, when they face Magpies Netball in Round 14 at Nissan Arena on Saturday 26 September.
