The Queensland Firebirds look set for a tough week at training following their biggest loss of the season in Saturday’s night’s Battle of the Bruce against rival the Sunshine Coast Lightning.
A below par performance saw the Firebirds go down by 21 in front of a home crowd at Nissan Arena, with the Lightning prevailing 61-82.
In what was a demanding week with three games and two away trips, the Firebirds ended it with three losses.
That disappointing return leaving Firebirds coach Megan Anderson to hint at some stern words being needed – after media asked if she would deliver a ‘rocket’ like other coaches had after losses in recent weeks.
“We have been trying to keep the confidence high knowing that it is a short turnaround this week for all of our games,” Anderson explained.
“Maybe it is time for the rocket tonight, we’ll see what happens, they have six days to get over it.
“It is just about looking at the video and seeing what we can mix up and bring for next weeks game.
“We have two good solid sessions this week so hopefully we can nut things out and put on a good showing next week.”
Whichever approach Anderson and the High Performance team decide to take, they will be hoping it sparks the team ahead of next week’s clash with West Coast Fever in Perth.
Anderson herself labelled the match against the second-placed Fever as a ‘huge test’ for her side as they fight to keep their finals chances alive.
“They (Fever) are playing really well, they’ve got that firepower in Jhaniele (Fowler), a fit and fast midcourt and a strong and dynamic defence end,” she said.
“We know we can beat anyone on our day, so we just need to find that spark again.”
The Firebirds will travel to Perth to take on the Fever next Saturday at 8pm.
