Queensland Firebirds have added a further injection of youth and enthusiasm ahead of the 2022 season, with the club elevating two exciting training partners to its senior list.
Emerging home-grown duo Ruby Bakewell-Doran and Mia Stower have been rewarded for their impressive development and performances when given the chance to wear purple.
Bakewell-Doran burst onto the Suncorp Super Netball scene this year making her debut in round nine against the Giants before playing a further two games.
“It was one of those proud netball moments to see her get an opportunity this year,” Firebirds head coach Megan Anderson admitted.
“She certainly took the opportunity and showed that she had what to takes to step up to SSN level.
“Ruby can play all three positions and she’s one of those defenders who just knows where the ball is going to go and that makes her such an asset to our defensive unit in 2022.”
Bakewell-Doran has made the most of her limited opportunities by showcasing her impressive athleticism and skills when hitting the court.
Now with her first SSN contract, the defender is confident she can be an x-factor for the Firebirds on a more regular basis.
“I bring my own skills and flare both on and off the court to this team,” she said.
“It’ll be about owning that and making it fit and thrive in a team setting.
“We all bring something really different which is super exciting. Seeing all of that talent come together is pretty amazing.”
Stower, also a Queensland pathway product, is one Anderson has personally watched develop from Queensland School Girls to the Australian Under-21 team.
After working with the talented goalie for the past year, the Firebirds coach is excited to help Stower further develop.
“She has one of the best netball brains going round and it’s lovely to watch her weave her magic out on court,” Anderson said.
“She’s mature and has great leadership potential which will add immensely to our group in 2022.”
When informed of the club’s decision to offer Stower a contract, she admitted it was an overwhelming experience.
“I was just in awe; was actually speechless. I just couldn’t wait to tell my mum because it is a dream come true really,” she said.
“I will wear the purple dress with pride”
The promising 21-year-old has been mentored by Firebirds stars such as Gretel Bueta and Romelda Aiken, and believed they have her ready to take this opportunity with both hands.
“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from players with such calibre who have represented their country and have all that experience and knowledge,” Stower said.
“I can only hope that one day I can learn enough to do the same.”
