The Queensland Firebirds are looking sharp for Sunday’s Mother’s Day round against the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Nissan Arena.
Queensland Firebirds CEO, Catherine Clark, said the Firebirds have trained with extra focus and determination this week hoping to secure their first win of the season.
“We took away important lessons from Round One but it cost us some points. I was immensely proud of our performance and the Queensland spirit we showed to fight back. This is a new week, and we are playing for some special people – our Mums. We hope to give them a little extra to celebrate on Mother’s Day,” Clark said.
“Sunday will also be the first Mother’s Day for Gretel Bueta which is exciting for Grets and our purple family. I’d also like to acknowledge the mums and caregivers in our netball community – our coaches, managers, umpires, administrators and spectators – we couldn’t do netball without you and we hope you have a magnificent day.”
Ms Clark said she was keen to see the contest in the circle between fellow Jamaicans, Romelda Aiken (Firebird), Shamera Sterling (Thunderbird) and 2021 recruit Latanya Wilson (Thunderbirds) on Sunday.
“What an exciting contest we will have in the goal circle as Romelda takes on international team-mates Shamera and Latanya. The versatility in our attacking line-up will give the defenders a headache”.
Clark, a veteran of ACL reconstruction herself, also sent well wishes to Kiera Austin (GIANTS Netball) for a speedy recovery. “I was devastated for Kiera as she will miss the season but she is resilient, and she’ll come back stronger. At the Firebirds we got Mahalia through two knee injuries and back on court in great form so, there’s lots of experience in the system to support Kiera through this.”
The Firebirds will play the second game of the season against the Thunderbirds at Nissan Arena on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9 at 3pm.
Our Firebirds fans will be out in force. Tickets start from $15 and are available via Ticketek.
