Queensland Firebirds defender Tara Hinchliffe will miss the rest of the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball league season after scans revealed a ruptured ACL.
Hinchliffe suffered the injury to her left leg at training on Sunday afternoon.
The vice-captain was in career-best form according to coach Megan Anderson, who also had her down as a serious contender for Diamonds squad selection.
Anderson said she was devastated for Hinchliffe but admired the way she was dealing with it and still supporting the team.
“Tara has just been so strong for us this year, not only on the court but also off it, really stepping up into that leadership position,” Anderson said.
“The girls really respect her honesty, passion and authenticity and we’re certainly lucky the season looks to be continuing in Queensland, which will allow Tara to stay connected with the group.”
The Firebirds will continue to monitor Romelda Aiken, who injured her ankle during the final minutes of Monday night’s win over the Sunshine Coast Lighting, before managing to play out the match.
The club’s medical team will be working around the clock to ensure Aiken is available for their next match as the crucial run to finals continues.
The Firebirds are still waiting for the league to finalise fixturing for the next round.
