The eleventh player is a new initiative introduced this year, offering SSN clubs the opportunity to sign an additional athlete who can be brought into the match day squad for tactical purposes throughout the season, not just in the case of injury or illness to a contracted athlete.
Having made the move to Brisbane from Sydney late last year after being offered a training partner contract by Firebirds Head Coach Bec Bulley, the 27-year-old will now be eligible for selection throughout the upcoming season.
Miller’s nomination means she is a step closer to making her SSN debut, justifying her decision to switch states along with son Talanoa.
“It really is a dream come true,” Miller said.
“Ever since having Talanoa I’ve always wanted to be a mum first and then an athlete second and it’s pretty cool that I get to experience that this year and SSN, hopefully debuting, just seems that bit closer and I’ll be doing everything I possibly can to hopefully get the call-up.”
A NSW Swifts’ training partner in 2018 and an Australian 19U squad member, Miller hails from Wagga Wagga and has represented the ACT during her career.
Miller captained the Swifts Academy team at last year’s Australian Netball Championships where the 190cm goaler scored 191 goals at the tournament, at a competition-high 97.9 per cent.
At last weekend’s Suncorp Team Girls Cup, Miller shot 16 of 16 goal attempts in the one-point win over the West Coast Fever as well as a perfect 11 from 11 against the Swifts.
“Ali has quickly settled in with our playing group since her move north and her and Talanoa are firmly now in the Purple Family,” Bulley said.
“I’m delighted she has the opportunity as our eleventh player for the season ahead, ensuring we can have her height, eye-for-goal and leadership to add to our shooting ranks in 2024.”
The Firebirds begin their 2024 SSN campaign against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday, April 13.
