Wallam scored 55 goals from 57 attempts including four Suncorp Super Shots as the Firebirds claimed a 70-66 win in front of 3059 fans at Nissan Arena on Sunday.
The victory is the team’s first of the season and Head Coach Bec Bulley’s first at the helm.
Bulley stuck with the seven that finished last weekend’s narrow two-point loss to West Coast Fever, handing Emily Moore and Macy Gardner their first SSN starts of their career.
The decision paid instant dividends with the home team getting off to a blistering start, opening up and early six-point lead before two Suncorp Super Shots from Sophie Dwyer reduced the margin to four at the end of the first quarter.
Bulley shuffled her pack once more in the second quarter, with Gabi Simpson coming on for Lara Dunkley as Kim Ravaillion moved back into centre and Gardner shifted to wing attack.
Despite the reshuffle, the visitors hit back to briefly snatch the lead before Wallam’s first Suncorp Super Shot of the match brought scores back level.
When Moore smartly played a ball off the post to earn a penalty as the halftime siren sounded, the goal attack was able to finish to ensure scores were tied 33-all at the main break.
A knee injury to Giants captain Jo Harten left the visitors one short on the bench while Mia Stower was introduced for Moore for the Firebirds at halftime.
Queensland dominated the second half, with only a flurry of Suncorp Super Shots from Dwyer and Harten’s replacement Matisse Letherbarrow keeping the Giants in the hunt.
The match was sealed however when Wallam finished off a lightning counter-attack with a trademark layup before her fourth Suncorp Super Shot of the match with 30 seconds to play.
Gardner ended the match with 30 feeds, 16 goal assists and two gains while Ravaillion led from the front in a super-cool display with 11 goal assists and two intercepts.
Stower was excellent in her two quarters, notching 17 goal assists, while Ruby Bakewell-Doran starred in defence with five gains.
The Firebirds travel to Melbourne next weekend to take on the Vixens at John Cain Arena from 5pm on Saturday, 29 April.
