Taking on competition newcomers Melbourne Mavericks at the Waverley Netball Centre, the Firebirds Futures made a quick start but couldn't hold as they slipped to a 62-49 defeat.
Flegler was named Futures Players' Player after the match following a performance where the Queensland Firebirds training partner combined relentless defence with some brilliant feeds to her goalers.
Other notable performers in the season opener included Samoa international Jessie Laga'aia while Danielle Taylor and Lily Gribble won plenty of ball in the defensive end.
Despite going 7-1 up at the start of the game, the Mavericks rallied and found a new gear to take the match away from the Firebirds Futures.
The Super Netball Reserves continues this weekend with the Firebirds Futures hosting two games at Nissan Arena.
First up will be the visit of GIANTS Netball for a match-up after the Firebirds' Suncorp Super Netball clash against Adelaide Thunderbirds from 7.30pm on Saturday before then facing the Thunderbirds Futures on Sunday from 12pm.
