The dynamic midcourter was displaying the best form of her fledgling career when a collision during the Round Seven clash with the Melbourne Vixens left her with a broken wrist.
It was a gutting blow for Gardner, as the injury proved to be season-ending.
Having recovered fully, the 23-year-old is looking forward to what lies ahead after signing a three-year deal which will keep her in the Firebirds nest until at least the end of the 2026 season.
"I’m super excited to be a Firebird for the next three years," Gardner said.
"There is no other club I'd rather be a part of.
"We have an exciting group, who are extremely motivated to have success and I can't wait to see what 2024 and beyond brings."
Having been around the Firebirds environment since she was a young girl, Gardner made six appearances in 2023 including her first start for the club in the Round Six win over Giants Netball at Nissan Arena.
Against the Giants Gardner recorded 16 goal assists, two intercepts, two deflections and two gains in an all-action display.
Before her unfortunate injury against the Vixens, Gardner had recorded 65 Nissan NetPoints despite playing only 42 minutes of that match.
Even though her season was over, Gardner remained a key part of the team throughout the rest of the campaign and her commitment to the team was reflected with her claiming the Firebirds’ Spirit Award at the 2023 Awards Gala.
“Macy’s injury was a real blow not just for her but for the team, especially as it came just as she was showing the league how good of a player she is,” Head Coach Bec Bulley said.
“It says a lot about Macy’s character and spirit that despite the obvious disappointment that came with the injury news she remained an integral part of the team for the rest of the season and approached her recovery with the same determination and attitude she brings to the court.
“I cannot wait to see what she’ll bring to us this season.”
