Queensland Firebirds great Laura Geitz has been inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame, recognising an extraordinary career defined by leadership, resilience and success in purple and on the international stage.
Growing up in Allora on Queensland’s Darling Downs, Geitz’s journey to the top took her to the Australian Institute of Sport and the Canberra Darters.
Homesickness nearly brought that journey to an early end, but encouragement from her father convinced her to persevere in the capital before returning to Queensland to join the Firebirds in 2008.
It marked the beginning of a remarkable association with the Club.
Making 141 appearances in the iconic purple dress, Geitz established herself as a world respected defender and one of the Firebirds’ greatest-ever leaders.
In 2011, Geitz stepped into the captaincy following Lauren Nourse’s ACL injury and led the Firebirds to their first ANZ Championship title.

Her outstanding season was recognised with both the Liz Ellis Diamond and ANZ Championship Player of the Year honours.
A fierce competitor with an imposing defensive presence, Geitz became a cornerstone of a golden era for the club.
After consecutive Grand Final defeats in 2013 and 2014, she captained the Firebirds to back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016.
Those triumphs secured her place in club history, completing a three-premiership legacy built on determination, composure under pressure and inspiring leadership.
Geitz took a season away from netball in 2017 to welcome her first son, Barney, before returning to the Firebirds for one final campaign in 2018.
She retired at season’s end with 169 National League appearances for the Darters and Firebirds.
Her impact on the international game was equally significant.
Diamond No.149, Geitz made her Australian debut against England in Newcastle in 2008, having previously won bronze at the 2005 Netball World Youth Cup aged just 17.
Across 71 Test appearances, she represented Australia at two Netball World Cups and three Commonwealth Games.
Geitz was part of the Diamonds’ World Cup-winning teams in 2011 and 2015 and captained Australia to Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow in 2014.
She also claimed Commonwealth Games silver in Delhi in 2010 and on the Gold Coast in 2018, where she made her final international appearance.
With 26 victories from 29 Tests as Australian captain, Geitz set a standard of leadership and performance that delivered success on the biggest stages.
Her individual honours reflect that influence. Alongside the 2011 Liz Ellis Diamond, she was twice named ANZ Championship Player of the Year, in 2011 and 2014.

She has also been inducted into the Netball Queensland Hall of Fame, Queensland Sport Hall of Fame and Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Her contribution to Queensland netball is permanently recognised outside Nissan Arena.
Created by sculptor Liam Hardy and first unveiled in 2017, a bronze statue of Geitz made her the first female athlete recognised with a life-sized statue in Queensland.
Within the club, the Firebirds’ annual Most Valuable Player award is named in her honour, ensuring her legacy remains part of each new chapter in purple.
Her induction into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame as an Athlete Member stands as a fitting tribute to a career defined by loyalty, resilience and outstanding leadership.
The Australian Netball Awards will take place on 30 October in Melbourne.
