The Queensland Firebirds are set to face Victorian rivals the Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies in back to back games, after the League today released fixture details for rounds 2 and 3 of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season.
The original fixture became redundant following the decision to move all 8 clubs to Queensland ahead of round 1, resulting in an increased number of games to be played at the Queensland Firebirds’ home, Nissan Arena.
Under the revised fixture, the Firebirds will now meet the Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies in rounds 2 and 3, with the condensed nature of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season to be highlighted with just a 2-day turnaround between games.
Netball Queensland CEO, Catherine Clark, said clubs really had little choice but to adapt to the changing environment.
“Our Club was built by members of the netball community, so we are always asking for Sunday matches to enable our Firebirds Members, many of whom are involved in community Netball on Saturdays, to get to as many games as possible,” Clark said.
“We have certainly lobbied for some Sunday games however this year we know the league will prioritise getting the number of games in and our venue can deliver the short turnaround for the Saturday double-header timeslots.”
“Ultimately, we are very lucky. Fans in other States don’t even get the chance to watch their home sides so we are feeling grateful that Queenslanders have the opportunity to see so much world-class netball in a live environment.”
“As for the short turnaround between games, I think the opening round of fixtures displayed how fit and resilient Suncorp Super Netball athletes are. There’s no doubt it’s going to be tough and test the fitness of all players. Our strength and conditioning staff will do everything they can to monitor and support the playing group.”
The Queensland Firebirds round 2 game against the Melbourne Vixens originally scheduled for Sunday 9 August has been shifted to Saturday 8 August, and will be the second game in another double header fixture also involving GIANTS Netball and the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
Centre pass in the Firebirds game will be at 3:15pm.
Round 3 will see the Firebirds face the Collingwood Magpies as part of another Double Header fixture at Nissan Arena on Tuesday 11 August, with the game getting underway at 7:30pm following a clash between GIANTS Netball and West Coast Fever.
