After successfully launching the Container Cup - Netball Queensland Recycling Challenge in 2024, it’s back in 2025 offering netball associations and clubs across the state the chance to make a real difference while also raising funds.
The return of the competition comes as Containers for Change extended its official partner status with the Firebirds and NQ for another three years.
The challenge invites associations and clubs to collect eligible 10-cent containers throughout the season, with the top performers set to share in $15,000 worth of prizes that are up for grabs.
NQ Chief Executive Officer Kate Davies said after last year’s successful launch, it was exciting to know that fans and players alike could once again support the netball community through the initiative.
“The Container Cup was a popular addition to our community events in 2024, encouraging associations to sign up and fundraise through container collection,” Davies said.
“It also spread awareness throughout the netball community, encouraging everyone to recycle and make sustainable choices.”
Natalie Roach, Chief Executive Officer of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, said netball fans were avid recyclers.
“The response from the netball community to the Container Cup has been incredible and I’m delighted to have the competition back this season,” Ms Roach said.
“Containers for Change is approaching a significant milestone of 10 billion containers returned, which has put $1 billion in 10-cent refunds back into the pockets of individuals, community groups and charities.
“This milestone has been achieved in no small part thanks to our partnerships with organisations like the Queensland Firebirds and Netball Queensland, which help raise awareness of the scheme and encourage more people to return their eligible beverage containers.”
Containers for Change’s partnership with the Firebirds and NQ strives to educate the netball community on the importance of recycling, emphasising sustainability and environmental responsibility. In addition, the collaboration aims to support stadium collections, reinforcing the idea that every container counts towards creating a more sustainable future.
Nissan Arena, the home of the Queensland Firebirds, currently recycles 120 per cent of containers used with green Containers for Change bins located throughout the venue and patrons bringing containers from outside the stadium for recycling.
