As one of the leading netball teams in Australia, the Firebirds are committed to sustainability and reducing environmental impact. The team is proud to partner with Containers for Change to make a positive difference.
Containers for Change provides Queenslanders with the opportunity to help the planet and their back pocket by earning a 10-cent refund for eligible drink containers that are returned to a refund point.
Since launching in November 2018, over 6.3 billion drink containers have been returned, refunding more than $630 million to Queenslanders including charities and community groups.
Fans can get involved at Nissan Arena home games by recycling their eligible empties in the green Containers for Change bins available throughout the stadium. Refunds from these empties will go towards Netball Queensland’s Diamond Spirit program - a holistic community engagement program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls in regional communities.
Containers for Change chief executive officer Natalie Roach says that she is looking forward to working with the Firebirds, supporting the iconic Queensland team and demonstrating how easy it is to save containers from landfill.
"We are excited to partner with the Queensland Firebirds and support their commitment to sustainability. By working together, we can raise awareness about the importance of recycling and reduce litter and waste in Queensland," she said.
“We have already seen great interest from netball and sporting fans at Nissan Arena with over 100,000 containers being recycled using our bins since they were first installed at the beginning of 2022.
“We know so many Queenslanders recycle their containers for refunds at home – this partnership with the Queensland Firebirds will showcase how fans can continue to recycle their empties when they are away from home, at Nissan Arena games and at their local clubs.”
Grassroots netball clubs across Queensland fundraise with Containers for Change, with more than $14,000 raised by clubs so far, it’s a win-win for the clubs and the environment.
“We are thrilled to partner with Containers for Change and promote sustainable practices in our community,” Netball Queensland chief executive officer Kate Davies said.
“We recognise our responsibility to protect the environment and hope that our partnership will inspire others to join us in creating a more sustainable future. Containers for Change also offers one of the easiest ways for our member clubs and associations to fundraise, while also reducing litter.”
Clubs can get started in their fundraising journey by signing up for a member number and accessing the Containers for Change Toolkit for charities and community groups.
