The Queensland Firebirds reined in a 15-goal three quarter time deficit to 7 in the final quarter against the top of the table GIANTS, but it wasn’t enough to bring home the win.
The Queensland side had a typically fast start, matching the GIANTS goal for goal in the first quarter and out shooting them in the final quarter. However, the GIANTS second and third quarter shooting run-on saw victory elude the Firebirds 60-67.
Firebirds captain, Gabi Simpson said she was proud of the team’s start and calm on court presence.
“We started quite well and were calm with a presence particularly on our long court defence”, Simpson said.
“Throughout the middle of the game the GIANTS upped their defensive pressure – which came to us making a few little errors. Those errors caught up with us on the scoreboard.”
“In the last quarter, I was happy with our ability to find a way back into the game. I think we showed some real character. We just needed it a little earlier and left it too late.”
“At the end of the day the GIANTS were just more consistent so, the challenge is now set for us as we shift our focus to the Magpies next week.”
Head Coach Megan Anderson was pleased with the team’s opening and final quarter, as well as the commitment to supporting each other to reign in the lead.”
“We came out with a game plan and our commitment for the ball in the first and final quarters was great, Anderson said.”
“In the second and third quarters, we were a little flat in attack and unable to disrupt the GIANTS circle.”
“Coming into next week’s game against the Magpies, I’m keen to see the team be intent on their drives and let the ball go for each other which was the key to our success in the final quarter tonight, Anderson said.”
The Firebirds next match against Collingwood Magpies will be played at 3pm on Saturday, May 22 at the Silverdome Arena, Launceston.
