The Queensland Firebirds’ pre-season games due to be played in Mackay have been postponed.
We want to assure the Mackay community that we were really looking forward to seeing you next week and, send our sincere apologies for the further delay.
However, due to the unforseen weather event in South-East Queensland and, the impact this has had on our community we have made the decision, in conjunction with Mackay Regional Council to postpone the event.
Netball Queensland and Queensland Firebirds CEO, Kate Davies, said she was grateful for the support and understanding of the Mackay community at this time.
“Many parts of Brisbane remain flooded and the clean-up is just beginning for both our residents, staff and the many associations affected by the floods. Our players are also mobilising to be part of clean-up efforts across the affected communities. We are also planning free netball clinics for our junior netballers so, parents can have support while they get the clean-up underway, she said.”
Our netballers always rally in times of need and we ask for your understanding at this time. At least 11 Netball Associations and many more clubs have been flooded in several affected areas. Some of our larger regional and Southern Queensland associations - Gympie, Hinterland, Wests, Downey, Metro – are currently planning to move their season starts or move to other venues to keep our carnivals and netball seasons alive".
“We want to assure our Mackay fans that we are committed to providing SSN level games to the Mackay community and are looking to scheduling this year, along with other activities around the Commonwealth Games.”
Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said the second postponement was disappointing for Mackay netball fans but understandable given the flood crisis in the south-east.
He said Mackay was looking forward to rolling out the welcome mat later this year for the Queensland Firebirds when they visited Mackay for the rescheduled trip.
“It will be fantastic to have these top-class netball players in Mackay and council is proud it will be able to help make that happen through our Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program,” Williamson said.
Nissan Arena, the home of netball in Queensland is also likely to be one of three staging locations for the Mud Army 2.0 who will be helping residents and our associations with the big clean up.
Queenslanders across the state have rallied in support of our associations over the past few days and we’d like to thank the Mackay community for both their support and understanding. We promise to bring you something amazing later this year.
Tickets will be refunded over the coming days. Those who had purchased tickets to previous matches will be given first option on tickets when they come on sale later in the year.
