The Queensland Firebirds have held onto their top four spot on the Suncorp Super Netball league ladder after a strong 13-goal win over the GIANTS in Sydney on Tuesday night.
Despite just a two-day turnaround from their hard-fought loss to the Fever on Sunday, the Firebirds made their interstate trip well worth it after notching up their second victory, 72-59.
Head coach Megan Anderson said her players were ‘embracing the grind’ early, before taking their performance up a gear to run away from the GIANTS.
“We had a really good mindset going into the game and it was good to get the win and now a few days to recover before our next one,” Anderson said.
“It showed we have 10 players we can get out there on the court and our eight, nine and 10 players really came on and did their job when we asked them to and that was really pleasing.
“I think that was the major highlight, the fact that we utilised all 10 players and everyone contributed for the minutes they were on.
“It really was going to be a team-effort tonight with the super-short turnaround and I expect it is going to be the same again this weekend against the Thunderbirds.”
In what was clearly a strong all-round team performance, the Firebirds were once again led impressively by captain Kim Ravaillion who was voted Player of the Match.
Speaking post-match the Firebirds leader was quick to dodge the spotlight and also direct the praise to her teammates.
Though her coach was one of many who still chose to applaud Ravaillion for her starring role and leadership.
“Rav (Ravaillion) was awesome,” Anderson acknowledged.
“I think she was really instrumental in a lot of our defensive turnovers and in attack she was super calm, and she was able just to play the ball around until it opened up for our shooters.
“So, I was really impressed with how she went, especially against a quality player of Jamie-Lee Price.”
The Firebirds will now fly back to Brisbane as they begin their preparations for Sunday’s Easter clash against Adelaide Thunderbirds at Nissan Arena.
