UQ has been a premier partner with the Firebirds and NQ since 2016, with the extended deal taking the collaboration until the end of 2025.
The partnership with NQ and the Firebirds provides UQ students with the opportunity to work in an elite sporting environment or undertake research projects.
The collaboration has prioritised First Nations engagement, with specific programs designed to promote inclusivity and cultural diversity within the netball community and break down barriers for individuals seeking to attend university.
UQ is also endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) as an Elite Athlete Friendly University, offering athletes the resources to pursue a dual career in sports and study.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the partnership would continue to promote higher education to women and support future athletes.
“It’s also helping to train the future workforce through industry placement opportunities for our students, building important skills in the lead up to 2032 and beyond,” Professor Terry said.
Established in 2019, the UQ Firebirds Scholarship program has empowered the dreams of the netball community, creating exciting opportunities for Year 12 students with a connection to netball, and bridging the gap between their academic ambitions and their love for the sport.
“It is fantastic to be extending our partnership with UQ,” NQ Chief Executive Officer Kate Davies said.
“This partnership offers so many benefits, whether it’s furthering the career aspirations and education opportunities of our entire netball community, to giving UQ students the opportunity to further their research or gain real-life working experiences.”
